This package aims to help madrichim develop skills for having conversations with young people on an individual and group basis. Young people can really benefit from having the space to express themselves and be heard. This package includes resources to help you develop listening skills and have conversations about sensitive subjects. There are also model activities which you can run with groups of young people in order to encourage them to reflect, open up and discuss their thoughts and feelings about issues which affect them.
Young people might choose to talk to their madrichim about a range of social welfare issues such as homesickness, bullying or family life. This handout explores how madrichim can handle these types of conversations and create safe space for individuals to express themselves. It contains some tips and advice for madrichim on how to listen and act as a supportive soundboard.
This is a model peula (activity) which you can adapt and run with a group of young people at the beginning of a residential activity such as a summer camp. This peula aims to help build a positive group dynamic and encourage participants to share thoughts and feelings about what type of group they want to create and how they will treat each other. Running activities such as this can help to create an inclusive group atmosphere and enable chanichim to become comfortable with being open and communicating as a group.
This is a model peula (activity) which you can adapt and run to explore the topic of 'protest' with a group of chanichim at a residential activity such as a summer camp. This session can encourage chanichim to reflect on their own 'protests'. It is natural for groups to experience challenges and push behavioural boundaries. This kind of session can be used to improve feedback and communication skills between madrichim and chanichim, to explore group issues and build dialogue. It is also a great tool for educating about different protests and issues in Israel.
This resource explains the concept of running processing sessions with chanichim - a chance for small groups to come together, reflect on experiences and share thoughts and feelings. It explains different types of processing - educational and social/emotional, and offers tips for how to run such sessions in a manner which encourages open sharing and conversation.
This resource offers a list of creative methods and approaches to run processing sessions. You can adapt and use these methods with small groups of chanichim to encourage reflection, embed learning and trigger conversation.
This is an example of a processing method which can be used (in conjunction with the other processing resources) to encourage chanichim to express their feelings.
